India has a population of over 250 million ambitious young people but only about 4% laptop penetration among this group.  For students and young professionals in India, a laptop often serves several roles: a classroom, a workspace for coding, a creative tool and a way to build a business. Supporting these activities requires responsive applications, efficient multitasking and the flexibility to adopt new tools as users’ needs change.

Primebook, an Indian deep-tech company, designs its computing platform around these users. The company combines purpose-built hardware together with its proprietary OS, PrimeOS, built on Android technology and its underlying Linux Kernel, plus native applications and services. With the new Primebook 3, the company set out to expand that experience through stronger processing performance, faster memory and dedicated on-device AI capabilities built on the MediaTek Genio 720.

Why Primebook Needed a New Platform for India’s Laptop Market

The main design challenges were:

  • Responsive Computing Within an Accessible Platform: Primebook identified several challenges in India’s laptop segment under ₹40,000, including slow boot and application-loading times, limited performance, compatibility constraints, and battery efficiency challenges. Addressing those issues shaped the decision to design the operating system and hardware together using Arm architecture and Android technology for the underlying operating system.
  • Dedicated Processing for On Device AI: Primebook 3 needed dedicated AI acceleration to support local workloads, improving responsiveness and reducing reliance on cloud processing.
  • Faster Memory and Expanded Connectivity: LPDDR5 memory was required to support greater processing demands. USB 3.2 and DisplayPort capabilities; upgraded Wi-Fi & Bluetooth enable a wider range of peripherals to be interfaced. Support for 4K video decoding allows a more capable multimedia experience.
  • Coordinated Hardware and Software Development: PrimeOS, its built-in applications and services, and the hardware needed to work together on a common platform that could be optimized across performance, power consumption and AI processing as Primebook 3 moved into production.

How MediaTek Genio 720 Powers Primebook 3

The MediaTek Genio 720 brought these requirements together in an edge AI platform combining an octa-core CPU, a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU), LPDDR5 support and advanced multimedia interfaces.

  • Efficient Processing for Everyday Workflows: The Genio 720 combines two Arm Cortex-A78 cores with six Arm Cortex-A55 giving the Primebook 3 a stronger processing foundation.
  • Long Battery Life: Built on a 6nm process, the platform supports Primebook’s goal of balancing computing capability with low-power operation. LPDDR5 memory complements the processor, providing the memory architecture needed for more demanding applications and multitasking.
  • AI Acceleration Built into the Platform: The integrated eighth-generation MediaTek NPU provides up to 10 TOPS of dedicated total system AI performance, giving Primebook 3 dedicated hardware for supported speech, image-processing and generative AI workloads. This capability supports Primebook’s direction toward more agentic computing as it develops services such as PrimeAGNT, which is designed to execute tasks across applications and the web.
  • Connectivity and Multimedia for Broader Use: USB 3.2 and DisplayPort support give Primebook 3 a more versatile hardware platform for peripherals and external displays. 4K video decoding addressed Primebook’s requirement for higher-resolution media playback. Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity support modern wireless networks and peripherals.
  • A Platform Designed Around PrimeOS: Primebook integrates these capabilities with a software environment that includes PrimeOffice for offline-first documents, spreadsheets and presentations, and PrimeLinux for selected Linux applications and a terminal. By controlling both the hardware and PrimeOS, Primebook can tune the computing experience as a complete system and support users moving between learning, productivity and development tasks. The wider environment includes the Prime App Store for Android applications and select Linux applications. Task Manager supports device and application management, while PrimeSecurity addresses app safety and device health. For users who need additional software environments, PrimeX Cloud PC offers subscription-based access to virtual Windows and Linux systems. These services complement the laptop’s local capabilities and give Primebook users several ways to access the tools their work requires.

Results

The combination of the MediaTek Genio 720 SoC and Primebook’s proprietary operating system, PrimeOS, for laptops, with its built-in applications and value-added services, allowed the Primebook 3 laptop to achieve these results.

  • Greater Processing Performance: Primebook reports that the Genio 720 processor enabled Primebook 3 to deliver 25% faster performance than its previous-generation laptops.
  • More Headroom for Multitasking: Primebook reports up to 40% more performance headroom from the combination of Genio 720 and LPDDR5 memory compared with the previous generation.
  • Supported AI Workloads Running Locally: The integrated NPU enabled supported workloads including voice processing, image processing, background blur and noise cancellation to run directly on the laptop. These capabilities give PrimeOS a practical foundation for more responsive AI experiences with less dependence on cloud processing.
  • A Foundation for Production and Continued Development: The Genio 720 helped Primebook move Primebook 3 from development into production within its unified hardware and software architecture. Primebook can continue developing its computing ecosystem on a platform designed to accommodate more demanding applications and new ways of working.
